Chilling Wine!

You do not have much time before your friend´s arrival, and you need to get that wine bottle chilled. Well, you might be inclined just to pop it in the freezer. Although it certainly is an option, don´t, because there is a faster and safer way to get it cold!

From Storage to Serving

A wine´s storage temperature will dictate how a wine should be handled before serving. If the storage is not cool enough, some wines will require chilling. Other wines may need to be pulled out of the cellar early so they can gradually warm to the ideal serving temperature.

Ice Bucket Chilling

The best way to chill a bottle of wine is in an ice bucket or something that can act as one. Fill the bucket 2/3 full with an equal 50% mixture of ice and water. Be sure to add the water since ice alone will not chill the wine as quickly. If you skipping the water it will take more than 60 minutes to chill properly. Use the water and it takes only 10 to 20 minutes to get that bottle down to the proper serving temperature.

Freezer Method

Never put wine in a freezer. This method might be successful for a while, but eventually you will have a frozen, broken bottle mess in your freezer. Even if you do keep the focus and manage to chill a bottle with the freezer method, it will still take longer than using ice and water.

Refrigerator Chilling

Another way to chill your wine is to put it in a refrigerator. In this case, you need at least two hours in order to chill it thoroughly. Remember, most refrigerators are setup to maintain a temperature around 38 degrees F. Wines served too cold will exhibit less pronounced bouquet and flavors. These flavors become more evident as they get near their ideal serving temperature.
