Organic Wine - Wine Learning

While pouring the wine for the guests at my last tasting, I mentioned that the wine chosen was organic. The guests were quite surprised, with expressions on their faces ranging from mystified to suspicious. Many in the group had previously tried organic wine and found it lacking. However, today many organic wines are getting rave reviews from wine critics. In fact, you may have been drinking an organic wine and have been unaware of it. The wine industry has been producing organic wine quietly for years, and doing it well.

Organic wines are made in the healthiest way possible both for you as the wine drinker, and for the soil where the vines are grown. Much like other forms of farming, grape cultivation has also changed over the years with a move towards organic farming.

What Is An Organic Vineyard?

An organic vineyard has a regime that excludes artificial fertilizers and synthetic chemicals, including pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, growth regulators, and hormones. Pests and vine damaging rodents are fought off with natural bacteria based insecticides and the good bugs are encouraged to kill off the bad stuff. Grasses, weeds, and other vegetations are used as fertilizer, which will replenish the organic nutrients in the soil.

What About the Taste?

Now whether the organic wines taste any different is harder to judge. It is a bit tricky to have both organically and non-organically grown grapes in the same vineyard, which is needed to get an accurate comparison. What I can tell you is that the vines working naturally, rather than enhanced superficially, are producing less fruit volume, but the grapes harvested are richer in flavor and sugar, and that is passed down into the wine.

Biodynamic

The next level of organic farming is Biodynamic. A biodynamic farmer goes one-step further and attempts to benefit from the earth's natural forces. These cultivation techniques can include terrestrial and solar cycles, including the phases of the moon and the movement of the planets. It certainly takes a lot of faith and a strong set of nerves for the winemakers to utilize this practice.
